

Workshop in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie (Hunter Valley)


The traditional art of weaving has been an essential skill across most cultures of the world. Learn how to weave with weeds, garden prunnings, string, fabric scraps, rope, wires and e-waste to make beautiful baskets and sculptures for your home and garden. The random weave technique is perfect for the beginner and the experienced weaver, with endless possibilities for individual exploration. Get creative and unveil the beauty of this ancient craft!
Get in touch with your inner bowerbird, participants will be required to forage in their garden, parklands and local bushland for weedy vines and other appropriate weaving materials to supply most of their materials for the workshop. A full materials list and guide to foraging for beginners will be sent to all ticket holders.

LAKE MAC: Visit the studio of Michelle Leilani, nestled on the edge of the bush where the bower birds call home, you'll enjoy working in the outdoor studio in a converted horse stable, surrounded by a thriving permaculture garden that provides plant material for the workshop.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Michelle is a practicing artist, a graduate of UNSW School of Art & Design. Her fascination with colour, textiles, and love for plants has been combined in her continued study and exploration of weaving & natural dying, receiving recent tuition with master weaver Matt Tommey (US) & master dyer Aboubaker Fofana.
